Rabbits

Lucy, lion-head rabbit

Rabbits have long been kept as pets throughout the world.  These small mammals are also native to different parts of the world and come in a variety of types, including cottontails, pikas, and hares.

Rabbits generally can live from four to twenty years, depending on the breed.  They are ground-dwellers that can be found in deserts, forests and wetlands.  Probably the most notable characteristic of rabbits are their long ears.  They have excellent hearing and long, powerful hind legs that help them detect and run from predators.

Rabbits are herbivores.  They eat a variety of grassesOnyx, common domestic rabbit and leafy weeds.  Commercially prepared hard pellets are fed in captivity in order to provide the nutrients necessary and unavailable without extensive grazing in a natural habitat.

Rabbits kept as pets need exercise and a special diet.  They are generally not considered suitable for small children because they are easily frightened by loud noises and can be easily harmed if mishandled.

Black Pine's resident rabbits include Lucy, a lion-head rabbit (top photo) and Onyx, a common black domestic rabbit.  Black Pine discourages the purchase of pet rabbits.  At Easter-time thousands of rabbits are bought to be given as gifts, though far too often little thought is given to the potentially long life they may live, expense of their keep, and other important considerations.
