 Black Welsh Mountain Sheep

This fellow has been around Black Pine for many years, as can be determined by his spectacular ram horns.  Males of this species are born with horn buds, making it very easy to determine gender right at birth.  Females never sport them.Black Welsh Mountain Sheep - Ram

Native to Wales, the Black Welsh Mountain Sheep has a lovely thick coat of wool that is quite unusual for its deep brownish-black color. Though there may be some textile companies still interested in the wool of this animal, they are likely few and far between since it cannot be dyed into the spectrum of colors that white wool can. We noted at Christmas time in 1998 that the Land's End catalog even offered a sweater made of this wool.

Black Pine's black Welsh have been in residence for many years, with the original pair purchased by the park's founders before the sanctuary was started.
