Denise did "target training" during her internship Denise Elliott

Began Volunteering:  June 2006

Resides:  Lafayette, where I attend Purdue University.

Employed: Columbian Park Zoo and K-Mart.

Family: I have a very large family with four sisters and three brothers, all who are grown and have their own kids, except my little sister who is 14 years old.  My parents are divorced.  One lives in Fredonia, NY where I grew up, and the other lives in Evansville, IN where I went to high school.

Favorite Animal:  India, a Bengal tiger.  I became so attached to her with target training and she would always brighten up my day.  Even though she is my favorite, all the animals at Black Pine have a special place in my heart and I miss them when I am not there.

Favorite Activity: Being able to make the animals lives more interesting and stimulating.  I didn't mind any chores I did, even scooping poop, taking out trash, or getting dirty.  I also loved Roar 'n' Snore, it was so much fun to sleep overnight and educate the public about all the animals.

Least Favorite Activity: Well, nothing - I enjoy everything!

What surprised me most about Black Pine was: How well the animals are taken care of, how clean the enclosures are, how the animals respond to different people, and how much everyone cares about them.

Comments:  I love what Black Pine is doing at the new site to improve the quality of life for the animals.
