Volunteer Work Days Scheduled:Locations

We are seeking volunteers to work daily.  Activities may include framing, insulating, running electricals, finishing work, clean-up, or other tasks.  Volunteers are asked to call Josh Price at 260-343-1974 to inquire about specific needs as they change daily.

 

Please dress for the weather and work assigned.  There is no need to bring power tools unless instructed or asked specifically to do so, but other tools may be used. 

 

We will provide water and/or Gatorade, a porta-potty, and bug spray.  This work is being done at the new site, located 1.5 miles west of the stoplight in Albion on West Main Street (in town), which is also known as CR 300 N, at the property marked with a sign reading "4-H Park" and "50-50-50 Project".  All volunteers will be asked to sign a waiver of liability and compensation, and provide emergency contact information.  For more info, please call the park office at 260-636-7383.  Thank you!

The Relocation Project....

The relocation project consists of three building phases.  Phase I is required simply to relocate the largest animals and provide housing for winter to ensure we meet our landlords' October 31, 2006 vacancy deadline.  Phase II consists of construction of permanent housing and exhibits for all animals, and until completed the park cannot re-open to the public.  Phase III includes the construction of facilities to enhance guest services and programs and accomplishes many of the long-term goals of Black Pine.

 

Below are many of the items and services we need to complete each phase:

 

Tools (all items were purchased by Black Pine):

  • Electric Cement Mixer
  • 48" Bull Float (concrete finishing)
  • Handles - 3 Sections (concrete)
  • Diamond Blade (for chop saw for cutting concrete)

Phase I:

  • 24x32x10' pole building for maintenance, office, restroom and storage

  • 24x40x10' pole building (commissary) for meat processing, food prep, grain storage, laundry, zookeeper office, restrooms, showers, lockers, break room

  • 40x40x12' pole building for chimpanzee house

  • 30x40x10' pole building for small primates and mammal house

  • 30x96x12' pole building, holding area for large cats and bears

  • Concrete for each building

  • Floor drains

  • Wellhead, 4" water lines, and pumps Donated in part by R & L Well Drilling & Franklin Electric)

  • Toilets, sinks, restroom accessories  (Sinks, mirrors, and installation donated by Doug & Kaylene Duncan)

  • Septic system:  three septic tanks, 6" and 4" pipe, and accessories

  • Outdoor electrical distribution panel (800 to 1000 amp service)  (Donated by Novozymes Biologicals & Phil Sensibaugh)

  • Electrical wiring, conduit & boxes  (Discounts provided by Kirby Risk and Kendall Electric on purchased items)

  • Light fixtures  (Partially donated by Town of Albion, Forker Excavating, and ESL - Spectrum Lighting)

  • Doors and windows  (Partially donated by Redman Homes; discounts from Home Depot)

  • Large exhaust fan for commissary  (Discount from Monarch Development)

  • Storage cabinets and shelving  (Partially donated by Dan & Margo Phillips and family)

  • Hardware (screws, bolts, pulleys, hinges, hasps, eye bolts, chain, vinyl-coated cable, etc.)  (Discounts from Fastenal)

  • Insulation  (Discounts from Home Depot)

  • HVAC systems  (Partially donated material & labor from J.O. Mory)

  • Construction labor and equipment for erection of pole buildings and all finish work.  (MANY volunteers!!)

  • Excavation of grounds, parking lot, driveways, and access roads  (Donated by Monarch Development)

  • Electricians, plumbers, and other expert / experienced laborers  (Donations from Phil Sensibaugh, Marty Thomas, Doug Duncan and others.)

  • Heavy duty, outdoor use padlocks, keyed alike, 2" hasp (approx. 40 locks needed) 

Phase II

  • Multiple individual animal habitats, various sizes

  • Galvenized metal panels to construct habitats  (Partially donated by Quick Tanks, Inc.)

  • Lumber

  • Steel siding

  • Concrete blocks  (Partially donated by Slater Concrete Products)

  • Concrete

  • Plumbing:  Drains and waterers, well pumps

  • Lighting fixtures

  • Electrical outlets

  • Entry doors & windows

Phase III

  • Education center to house classroom for education, library for staff and interns, offices, restrooms, small animal exhibits, small kitchen.  Specs to be determined.
